Farrukh stuns Shabana

ISLAMABAD, Aug 18: Farrukh Zaman of Pakistan pulled off the biggest upset when be topped top seed Amr Shabana of Egypt on the opening day of the main round of CAS International Squash Championship on Monday.

The world no.42 Farrukh Zaman scored a five-set victory 14-15, 15-13, 13-15, 15-8, 15-6 over Egyptian world no.12 Shabana in the US$25,000 championship being played at PAF Squash Complex, Peshawar.

The second seed Gregory Gaultier of France and no.3 Mansoor Zaman of Pakistan, however, got past the first round hurdle without much bother.

Mansoor Zaman edged out compatriot qualifier Majid Khan 15-14, 12-15, 11-15, 15-4, 15-13 while Gregory Gaultier beat the Netherlands qualifier, Laurence Anjema 15-8, 15-8, 15-11.

In other matches, M. Azlan Iskander of Malaysia beat Shahid Zaman of Pakistan 10-15, 15-6, 6-15, 15-5, 15-10 in 69 minutes while Omar Elborolossy of Egypt crushed Safeerullah Khan 15-5, 15-8, 15-3.

In an all-Egyptian affair, Muhammad Abbas overcame Weal El-Hindi 15-7, 15-9, 15-6 and Benan Lavigne of France had the better of Australian qualifier Glenn Keenan 15-8, 15-3, 15-11.

The host country’s wild-card, Farhan Mehboob lost to John Williams of Australia who won 8-15, 15-12, 15-14, 15-10.—APP
