Rifts appear in Upper Dir govt

By Haleem Asad

TIMERGARA, Aug 17: The coalition between the Al Khidmat and Sherpao groups in the upper Dir district seemed more fragile than ever as the opposition accelerated its efforts to table a no- confidence motion against the district Nazim.

Earlier, the no-confidence motion that was brought against Nazim Sahibzada Tariqullah during the budget session was declared illegal and void by the secretary local government.

The Al Khidmat group, sponsored by the Jamaat-i-Islami, had formed a coalition government in the district with the Sherpao group. The incumbent Nazim belongs to the Al Khidmat group, while his deputy is from the Sherpao group.

Sources said that councillors and union council and tehsil Nazims loyal to the Sherpao group begun weighing their options regarding quitting the district government, effectively withdrawing their support to Sahibzada Tariqullah.

They said if the Sherpao group withdraws its support, the no-trust move against the district Nazim was likely to be passed.
