First semester of GCU from Sept 15

By Our Staff Correspondent

FAISALABAD, Aug 17: The first regular semester of the Government College University, Faisalabad, will commence from Sept 15 with 10 new post-graduate programmes.

This was stated by Government College University Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Asif Iqbal while talking to newsmen here on Sunday.

The vice-chancellor said that only seven post-graduate courses — zoology, mathematics, English, Urdu, Arabic, economics and Islamiat — were used to be taught in the 90-year-old Government College before its upgradation to the university level.

He said that physics, chemistry and botany from the science subjects and fine arts, Pakistan studies and education from the arts subjects were included in the next semester in addition to four professional subjects — MSc, MBA in Executive, Textiles and Information Technology — which were already being taught.

He pointed out that commerce classes were also going to start from next month while the Law classes would commence after a few months.

The decision to introduce new subjects, he said, had been taken in the light of survey conducted by the University’s research centre, needs of skilled persons in industrial and commercial concerns and aptitude of the students.

The VC said that University’s each Board of Studies had compiled a new syllabus in consonance with the practical demands of the day so that the students qualifying from university could be absorbed in local industrial and commercial organizations.

About the Intermediate Session, he said that it had been established in schools attached with the university which was spread over 15 kanals and consisted of 20 classrooms which were being renovated.

The classes were expected to be commenced by Sept 15, he said and added that science classes, however, would be conducted in the university building, while the physics and IT labs would be built in the Intermediate Session at a latter stage.

Girl recovered: Nishtabad police have arrested three people, including a woman, for kidnapping a minor girl for ransom.

The district police officer told newsmen on Sunday Azam Ali of Chak 203-RB told police that his two-year old daughter, Fajar, had been missing since Friday. He received a phone call from kidnappers who demanded Rs140,000 as ransom for the release of his daughter.

The DPO said a special police team was constituted which recovered the girl and arrested three of kidnappers identified as Sadiq Masih, Catherine Masih and Nazia, the sister-in-law of the elder brother of the complainant. Their fourth accomplice, Anwar Masih, is still at large.

During investigation, the accused said they had demanded an amount of Rs150,000 from Azam for arranging the release of Nazia’s husband who was in the Kot Lakhpat jail, but he refused. So they planned to get the amount by kidnapping his daughter.
