SWABI, Aug 17: An eight-day international workshop on “energy efficiency for green productivity” opened at the faculty of mechanical engineering of Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute of Engineering Sciences and Technology at Topi on Sunday.

The workshop is jointly organized by the Islamic Development Bank and the GIK Institute.

Ten delegates from seven Muslim countries are participating in the workshop. They include Mr Serdar H. Kurbanaurdyev from Turkmenistan, Mr Cavit Unver and Ms Ilknur Yorulmaz from Turkey, Mr Tamerlan Hasan Tagiyev from Azerbaijan, Mr Alireza Moradi and Dr Ziaeddin Almassi from Iran, Dr Abdul Shaheed from Maldives, Mr Morshed Alam Khan from Bangladesh and Dr Abduali Toirov and Dr Safarali Naimov from Tajikistan.

GIKI Rector Dr Mohammad Naseer Khan told the opening ceremony that it was believed that a demand side energy management programme could contribute to maximizing efficiency in energy conversion, energy transfer and energy utilization.

He said that green energy concept would normally involve holistic discussions covering supply-demand issues of energy management as well as other emerging issues such as non-conventional energy sources, for example wind and solar energy etc.

The workshop, he said, would focus on supply and demand side energy management, especially in the context of commercial buildings. Chief of National Productivity Organization Saqib Mohiuddin said that green productivity was a strategy used to address environmental sustainable development.
