Davis Cup squad to be named on 15th


LAHORE, Aug 13: A four-member Pakistan tennis team to play South Korea in the next month’s play off home tie of the Asia Oceania Group-I will be named on Aug 15.

“At the moment 10 players are taking part in the trials which commenced here at Defence Club on Aug 11 and conclude on Aug 15”, said Rao Iftikhar Ahmad, Chief Coordinator of the tie on Wednesday.

He said a selection committee comprising Brig Khalid Sajjad Khokhar, Saeed Haye, Nasir Munir,Jamil Ahmad, Omer Rashid and Samad Khan would watch the players in action in the five-day trials.

Rao said the month long training camp will commence at the same venue on Aug 16. Pakistan will play South Korea in the third week of September and the host country having the choice of courts.

PTF and Punjab Lawn Tennis Association (PLTA) has chosen the grassy courts of the Defence Club as the venue of the tie.

Rao who is the senior vice president of the PLTA said the PTF officials had conducted the venue inspection and termed it suitable in all aspects for holding an international competition.

To a question, he said, Pakistan stand fair chances of winning the tie on the grassy courts as it suit the home players who were more comfortable on such courts.

“ Besides Aisam’s presence in the team will be an added advantage as he is rich in experience and played vital roles in teams success in the previous ties in the past”, he maintained.

He said the training camp would be run in two daily sessions and the record of the individual performance of the players would be maintained to draw balanced pairs for the tie.—APP
