Nine-wicket Adams spins SA to victory

CANTERBURY (England), Aug 10: South Africa spinner Paul Adams achieved the rare feat of taking nine wickets in an innings as the Proteas warmed up for next week’s third Test against England with a 101 run-win against Kent on the final day of three here on Saturday.

Left-arm spinner Adams’s career-best haul of nine for 79 was also the best innings analysis by a South African bowler in a first-class match in England.

The only other wicket to fall in Kent’s second innings was taken by Adams’s fellow left-arm spinner Robin Peterson, who caught and bowled Ed Smith for 27.

Earlier on Saturday, middle-order batsman Smith had been called up into the England squad for the first time ahead of the third Test at Trent Bridge.

Kent were left with 334 to win after South Africa declared their second innings on 243 for seven, Adams chipping in with a run-a-ball 22 not out.

Michael Carberry and discarded England batsman Robert Key put on 72 for the first wicket.

But Key, having made 49 was bowled by Adams. Smith fell to Peterson and then Adams, 26, whose unorthodox action was once likened to a “frog in a blender” took centre stage.

Matthew Banes was bowled by the Western Province star and Carberry, innings top scorer with 75, fell to Adams when he was caught at mid-wicket by Boeta Dippenaar.

Adams, on a dry pitch suited to his sharp spin, then mesmerised the rest of the Kent batsmen, the last six wickets falling for just 46 runs.

He ended the match by trapping Ben Trott lbw first-ball.

Summarised scores:

South Africa beat Kent by 101 runs.

SOUTH AFRICA 325-4 declared (N.D. McKenzie 105 not out, J.A. Rudolph 92, J.H. Kallis 77) and 243-7 declared (H.H. Dippenaar 69, J.A. Rudolph 65; J. Tredwell 3-75);

KENT 235 (A. Loudon 63, G. Jones 50; R.J. Peterson 3-58) and 232 (M. Carberry 75; P.R. Adams 9-79).—AFP
