LAHORE, Aug 10: No decision has so far been taken to start the recruitment process in the Punjab.

The process was to start early last month but was halted because of the MPAs demand to have a share in the jobs.

Official sources said on Sunday the process was in a doldrums because the government wanted to pursue merit as desired by the powers to be and the donor agencies but also did not want to annoy the MPAs as well.

They said a solution to the issue was being sought at the higher level but no-one knew what will be the method of accommodating the MPAs.

The government intends to create 100,000 vacancies in the province. Most jobs would be offered on a contract basis.

PIDA: The Punjab Irrigation and Drainage Authority (PIDA) constituted on Sunday 32 Nehri Punchayat at the Lower Chenab Canal.

Official sources said the training of the punchayat members has also been completed.

“The authority hopes that these members would handle their own affairs according to their mandate. Another 60 punchayat will be constituted by the year end.

“The authority plans another 120 such punchayat by the end of the next year under a phased programme sponsored by the World Band to reform the irrigation department,” they said.

At present, the Punjab Irrigation Department and the World Bank are locked in a debate on the extent and depth of reforms. The department wanted the World Bank to consider the peculiar problems of Pakistan. It wanted to first train the farmers, form their bodies, monitor their performance for a year or two and then transfer power to efficient bodies only.
