Greene skips Zurich, London meetings
RALEIGH (North Carolina), Aug 4: Olympic and world 100 metres champion Maurice Greene will miss the prestigious Zurich meeting on Aug 15 to concentrate on the Paris world championships starting in the following week.
The US sprinter’s manager Emanuel Hudson told Reuters Greene’s coach John Smith thought the meeting was too close to the championships.
“John likes to have a 10-day window before the championships,” Hudson said.
Instead Greene, who has been struggling with tendinitis in his right leg, will run the 4x100 relay at the Berlin Golden League meeting on Aug 10 as part of his preparation for Paris.
World 100 metres record holder Tim Montgomery will also be at the Berlin meeting and organisers said on Monday they were still hoping that Greene might run in the individual event against his compatriot.
“Maurice Greene is currently considering whether to also enter the 100 metres,” said Florian Schwarthoff, head of sports for the Berlin event.
Greene will also miss this Friday’s London grand prix after failing to agree terms.
Organisers said Greene and women’s sprinter Torri Edwards would not be running at Crystal Palace. The men’s 100 metres will feature Montgomery and Britain’s European champion Dwain Chambers.
