LAHORE, Aug 4: Heavy rain in the upper and lower catchments of the rivers Ravi and Chenab flooded nullahs in the Sialkot region on Monday.
The Chenab was also in medium flood at Marala at 5pm with a maximum discharge of 148,000 cusecs. The flood in the river started receding afterwards.
The Indus was in medium flood at Kalabagh, Chashma and Guddu. The Ravi was in low flood at Balloki.
According to the Flood Forecasting Division, there was widespread rain with isolated heavy falls over northern, north-eastern and central Punjab and also all over the upper catchment of the rivers Chenab and Ravi during the last 24 hours which flooded the nullahs, especially Basantar and Aik in Narowal and Sialkot region.
Sialkot received 162mm of rain, Shakargarh 90mm and Zafarwal 75mm till 8am on Monday. From 8am to 5pm Sialkot received another 59mm of rain and it was still raining there at 8pm.
The maximum discharge at Basantar was 11,734 cusecs and at Aik 20,940 cusecs at 5pm. They were in very high flood with reports of spillovers at many places. The FFD indicated that the water level in the Nullahs has started receding afterwards.
Nullahs Palkhu and Baeen were in low flood with a discharge of 2,700 and 1,710 cusecs, respectively. Nullah Dek was in medium flood with a discharge of 9,728 cusecs.
The FFD also reported that between 8am on Sunday to 8am on Monday, Malamjabba received 63mm of rain, Balakot 60mm, Parachinar 54mm, Jhang 45mm, Rahwali 37mm, Saidu Sharif and Mianwali 35mm, Besham 28mm, Dir 24mm, Chakwal 19mm, Kund 18mm, Kalam and Mangla 17mm, Kohat 15mm, Islamabad 12mm, Jhelum and Peshawar 10mm, Faisalabad and Muzaffarabad 7mm.
On Monday Kakul received 13mm of rain, Malamjabba 10mm, Murree 6mm, Kalam and Jhelum 4mm and Muzaffarabad 2mm.
The FFD has predicted widespread rainfall of moderate intensity with isolated heavy falls over the upper catchments of all the major rivers along with northern, northeastern and central Punjab, Peshawar, Kohat, Dera Ismail Khan and Dera Ghazi Khan divisions, northern, northeastern and southeastern Balochistan, southern Punjab, northern Sindh and Makran coast during the next 24 hours.
It reported the presence of a monsoon low over Gangetic West Bengal (India). But said the rain at present was being caused by a westerly wave over Kashmir, the seasonal low over southern Iran and adjoining Balochistan and the incursion of monsoon current from the Arabian sea which was penetrating up to the NWFP.
