KARACHI, July 30: Three bodies were retrieved from different storm water drains in the metropolis on Wednesday, bringing the death-toll in rain-related incidents in the current wet spell to 53.
Police and Edhi sources said that the body of a man was retrieved from a drain in Manghopir. Another body was recovered from Malir City’s storm water drain near Bakra Piri.
The body of one man was found floating in the Lyari tributary. The identity of none of the victims could be established.
Earlier, on July 29, at least 12 people were killed in rain-related incidents. Seven people died of electrocution and three drowned, of whom one, Imran, 19, was found in Khokhrapar’s storm water drain. An unidentified boy died after he fell off the roof of his house in Pak Colony. A seven-year-old boy, Anwer, died when he was trapped in the rubble of a wall of his house, which collapsed due to rain in Gulbahar.
On July 28, two men died of electrocution in the airport area and Jamia Cloth and a woman in North Nazimabad.
On July 19, at least 10 people lost their lives. Two young girls drowned in the Gujjar Nullah in Sharifabad and two boys also drowned during the rain. Five people were electrocuted. A man was killed and his wife and two children injured when the roof of their kutcha house caved in during the rain in Soomar Goth in Malir.
At least 10 people died and dozens were injured in the city on July 16. Substantial damage to public and private property was also caused by a dust storm that was followed by a downpour.
