KARACHI, July 30: At least 40, prisoners including 32 under-trial prisoners (UTP) and 8 convicts, have died in Sindh jails during the last seven months. The number of such deaths last year was 42, official sources say.

The actual cause of deaths of prisoners in 17 jails of the province, where over 18,000 prisoners are lodged, has never been made public. In certain cases inquiries are instituted but in most of the cases heirs of the dead take away the bodies quietly.
