KARACHI: Exchange of fire claims two lives

KARACHI, July 30: Three persons died in separate road traffic accidents in different parts of the city on Wednesday.

A young woman died and her nephew was injured when they were hitby a speeding water tanker on State Avenue Road in Site area.

Police said that Farzana, 30, died on the spot and her nephew Khurram, 22, sustained injuries when their motorcycle (NHB-3357) was hit the water tanker (LS-8300) while the victims, residents of Qasba Colony, were on their way to Shershah. The tanker driver escaped from the scene.

An eight-year-old boy, Yasin, died after coming under the wheels of another water tanker in Mominabad, Metroville. The tanker driver escaped from the spot with the vehicle.

An unidentified hit-and-run vehicle knocked down a middle-aged man on Habib Ibrahim Rehmatullah Road. The victim, in his 50s, could not identified and was shifted to the JPMC where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

SHOT DEAD: Two persons died and three others injured in an exchange of fire between rival groups in a dispute over a piece of land in Naseerabad locality of Pipri, Bin Qasim, on Wednesday.

Police said that Talib Husain and Fayyaz sustained fatal bullet injuries. The body of Talib Husain was shifted to the JPMC for postmortem whereas that of Fayyaz had not arrived there till filing of this report.

Three persons, Abdullah, Khalil and Barkat, were arrested after the incident and a police official said more arrest might follow as the investigation were under way.

KILLED: A woman was killed allegedly by her estranged husband in Gulshan-i-Hadeed late Tuesday night.

Police said that Noreen, 29, who was in the final stage of her pregnancy, had moved from Sialkot to her relatives in Gulshan-i-Hadeed following her strained relationship with husband, Nadeem Bhatti. A few days back, Bhatti also came to the city. Noreen was killed whileher relatives had gone out of town, police said and suspected that Bhatti might be involved in the murder. A case has been registered against Bhatti who is absconding since the killing, according to the police.

Noreen’s body was shifted to the JPMC for postmortem examination.

DROWN: A young man drowned while swimming in a water course in the limits of Sukkan police on Wednesday.

Police said that Hakim, along with his friend Murad, were swimming in deep water during which Murad realized that Hakim was losing balance and struggling for life. He tried to save Hakim but in vain.

The victim’s body could not be fished out till late in the night, police said.
