KARACHI: Turbid water supply to continue

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, July 30: Various parts of the city are being supplied murky water for the last couple of days.

Most of such complaints have been received from residents of Memon Goth, Scouts Colony, Gulshan-i-Iqbal, Safoora Goth, Karachi University, Malir Cantonment, North Nazimabad, parts of PECHS Block 2, Federal B’ Area, Baldia, Orangi, Shershah, SITE, North Karachi, Surjani Town.

However, a senior official of the city government’s water and sanitation department while describing the murky water as “safe for drinking”, asked the people to treat water with alum and also to boil it before consuming.

He claimed that only those areas which are supplied water from the Hub dam and from the Dumlottee wells are getting murky water.

“We are currently not using alum in the water because the turbidity in raw drinking water being received from Indus source is nowadays between seven and 10 units owing to rainy season.

“After undertaking purification process at the filter plants, the turbidity units are further reduced to four and five units and thus it is very much safe for drinking as permissible turbidity limit is 10 units.”

About the muddy water currently being supplied to Orangi, Baldia, Surjani, North Karachi, Shershah and other localities hooked to the Hub source, he said since the Hub water is not filtered, those getting supply from the Hub source will continue to get murky water for another four to six weeks owing to rainy season.

SHORTAGE: Different parts of former district East on Wednesday either went completely dry or received scant supply with low pressure.

The hard-hit localities included Landhi, Korangi, Malir, Khokhrapar and Shah Faisal Colony.

The W&S department officials attributed the water shortage to a shortfall of about 40 mgd which the city had suffered on Tuesday owing to power failures at Gharo and Pipri pump-houses.

A spokesman for the W&S department claimed that pumping of water to the city from Gharo and Pipri pumping stations remained suspended between 8am and 2pm and between 2pm and 5pm, respectively, on Tuesday and as a result the city had suffered a shortfall of 40 mgd on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, residents of North Karachi’s Sector 7-D/2 complained that about 30 houses of their locality, starting from House No L-57 are deprived of water for the last fortnight.
