LAHORE, July 29: In its initial report submitted to the Lahore High Court Chief Justice Iftikhar Hussain Chaudhry on the Sialkot jail incident, the fact-finding commission held the Sialkot Jail authorities and different police officials guilty of the killings of three judges and five prisoners.
Lahore High Court sources told Dawn on Tuesday that the Lahore High Court registrar, Sheikh Abdur Rashid, who was heading the three-member commission had submitted an initial report to the Chief Justice while the final report was likely to be submitted on Wednesday.
Without giving the details of the initial report, they disclosed that after recording
the evidence at Sialkot, the commission had concluded
that both the Sialkot jail and police officials were found responsible for the killings of three judges and five prisoners.
“The exact details regarding the involvement of the persons held guilty by the commission can only be ascertained through the final report,” the sources said, adding that after going through the contents of the commission’s final findings, the Chief Justice would decide whether a formal judicial probe was required.
The Chief Justice had appointed the fact-finding commission in exercise of his discretionary powers under Article 199 and 190 CrPC.
The commission had visited the Sialkot Jail on Monday and had recorded the statements of the jail superintendent, deputy superintendent, the low-rank staff of the jail including sweepers, gardeners and time keepers along with Gujranwala Deputy Inspector General of Police and other police officials.
