HYDERABAD, July 28: Over one dozen young cricketers of the city on Sunday burnt the effigy of chief coach of Regional Academy of Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for Hyderabad and former Test cricketer Azeem Hafeez for expelling former U-19 captain of Hyderabad, Shafiq Qureshi from Regional Academy and committing injustices with other U-19 boys.
The boys said that both these officials were bringing bad name to the Academy for their own vested interests.
Demanding expulsion of Azeem and and his deputy carrying a big banner, the cricketers raised slogans against the PCB officials before torching the former’s effigy.
Qureshi, a wicket-keeper, told newsmen that in the last week he was expelled from recently organised six weeks Regional Academy for being overage.
He said that in the middle of the night Hafeez, the assistant coach, woke him up, asking him to leave academy as a letter from Registration Office has been received about his age.
He said that he was not overage but in fact it was a technical mistake in his document which was duly corrected not only by National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra), education official and head master of his school.
Meanwhile, PCB has appointed Zila Nazim Dr Makhdoom Rafik Zaman as inquiry officer to investigate the ban on U-19 player, Abid Qureshi, imposed by District Cricket Association (DCA) Hyderabad for three months for playing any form of cricket.
Since the matter pertained to DCA Hyderabad it was decided that the matter should be referred to vice president of SCA who is also the Zila Nazim of Hyderabad.
No specific timeframe has been laid down by the PCB and Mr Zaman was only required to investigate and submit his report as soon as possible.
The Zila Nazim is already aware of the matter of Abid as he had met the boy when he had staged hunger strike on July 24 outside Hyderabad Press Club.
MATCH SHIFTED: The group final match of inter-district U-19 national cricket championship between Mirpurkhas and Shikarpur has been shifted to Mirpurkhas.
Earlier it was scheduled for Sunday and Monday. It would now be played on July 30-31 at Municipal Stadium.
