FTO for small taxpayer units

Published July 29, 2003

KARACHI, July 28: Federal Tax Ombudsman Justice (rtd) Saleem Akhtar on Monday underlined the need for setting up small tax payers units to facilitate them in the tax matters.

He was addressing the tax officials during his visit to Large Taxpayer Unit (LTU). Members and Advisors of FTO were also present on the occasion.

Appreciating the working of LTU he said that similar facilities should be offered to small taxpayers who are in a large number. He asked the tax officers to ensure justice in tax collection and do not go outright for tax collection only.

He asked income tax officers to change their behaviour towards tax payers. Tax officers should be polite and do not try to hammer the earth for tax collection purposes, he added.

Later, talking to newsmen, the Tax Ombudsman said his office receives a large number of complaints against tax officials for illegal, arbitrary assessment orders and corruption.—APP
