Oil tanker runs aground

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, July 27: A foreign oil tanker on Sunday stranded near Karachi Port on Sunday.

The oil tanker, Tasman Spirit, carrying 62,000 tonnes of crude-oil for the Pakistan Refinery, ran aground at the mouth of the Keamari channel, sources told Dawn.

Efforts to refloat the ship would probably begin on Monday morning at around 11am during the high-tide.

A spokesman for the KPT said that MT Tasman Spirit had gone adrift and grounded near the harbour’s mouth at around 1:15pm. Port’s channel remained open for transportation of ships. The drift happened due to a sudden squall. The vessel remained clear without disrupting normal port operations.

Meanwhile, the tanker started leaking oil, threatening marine life.
