Stormy victory for Burnt Heart

By Aftab Gilani

LAHORE, July 27: Three-to-one shot bay mare Burn Heart galloped home in a stormy fashion to win the feature event run over 1200 metres at the Lahore Gymkhana races at the Racecourse on Sunday.

The Abbot Abad Plate was a Class IV Division I and II combined handicap race and sixth and last in the racing order. As the gates opened Burn Heart took a flying start and leading the field all the way never let any of her eight rivals come near. She maintained the advantage and raced away clear from the field to win by two lengths from fancied Storm Bird. Dare To Dream and Zargar completed the frame.

Burn Heart was piloted by jockey Shahid Rehman efficiently to score a double to share the day’s riding honours with riding boy A. Aziz, who also had a brace of winners. This was Burn Heart’s third consecutive win. The winner is trained by Amjad Ali II.

Shahid Rehman had earlier won the fifth and supporting event, the Attock Plate Class V Division I and II run over the identical distance while partnering fancied King Of Bhakkar.

The brown gelding King Of Bhakkar ran second behind the leader Dhandhana in the early part of the race and sailed past the leader in the straight to win by four lengths from Dhandhana, who went wide. Amazing and Green Hill completed the board among 15 runners.

Riding boy A. Aziz had earned his double bringing home Copper Field and Weldon Shogun in the second and third race, respectively. Both the mounts were available at attractive odds of four to one each.

Rank outsider bay filly Legality won the fourth race defeating fancied Black Nigeria by three-fourth of a length. This filly from Re-Play out-of Minshaar had finished a distance behind the winner a week ago, but she ran like a champion on Sunday leaving the race-goers with fingers crossed.

The fancied three-year-old bay filly Sugar And Honey won the opener to begin the day on a happy note for backers of the favourites. With the exception of King Of Bhakkar, who was a 50 to 100 favourite in the fifth race, the other four events were bagged by those available at attractive odds.
