KARACHI, July 26: Fourth seed Naveen Perwani and seventh seed Farhan Mirza were in for rude shocks on the opening day of the Red & White Cup, going down by 3-4 margins to Mohammad Akhlas and Kashif Khan on Saturday.
Giant killer Akhlas began his match in great style winning the first three frames before Naveen gathering about his shattered wits drew abreast 3-3, grabbing the next three frames.
But that was to be his last hurrah, leading 11-2 in the final frame, Akhlas never gave Naveen a ghost of a chance, with a magnificent clearance of 54 to emerge a 4-3 winner.
On the other hand former national champion Farhan Mirza just back from Sweden where he is based, was moving ahead merrily with a 3-0 lead against Sindh’s Kashif Khan. But all of a sudden it was Kashif in the forefront as Farhan’s game went to pieces. Winning the last four frames on the trot, Kashif snatched victory to emerge a happy winner.
In a minor upset Punjab’s Abu Saim handed out a 4-1 defeat to NWFP’s Arifullah 4-1, chalking up 85, the highest break of the afternoon in the fourth frame.
Holder Saleh Mohammad lost the opening frame to Saqib Butt, but settling down went on to emerge a 4-2 winner.
Top seed Khurram Hussain Agha sounding a magnificent break of 77 in the first frame, beat Janan Khan 4-1, after dropping the fourth frame, while third seed and former world champion Mohammad Yousuf made short work of Shadab Baig 4-0.
Fifth seed Atiq Latif Bux also dropped a frame against veteran Yousuf Haroon, while sixth seed Imran Shahzad had to work up a sweat in disposing off Ahmed 4-3.
Eight seed Shakeel Bhatti got off to a wonderful start beating Raees Khan by a 4-0 margin and left-hander Vishan Gir was comfortable all the way in his 4-1 victory against Mohammad Asif.
Amit Perwani after dropping the opening frame, had to work hard in finally getting the better of Ahmer Shaikh 4-2, while Shah Khan beat Faisal Essa 4-1.
In a match that went the full distance, Rambel Gul got rid of Mustafa Haider 4-3. Mohammad Nazir beat Raja Rasheed 4-0, helped on with a break of 50 in the second frame and Imran Mughal stopped Minhas Malik in his tracks also by a 4-0 margin.
