INDIANAPOLIS, July 25: Andy Roddick showed no signs of the rustiness which blighted his return to action earlier this week as he powered past Gregory Carraz 6-4 6-3 to reach the quarterfinals of the RCA championships on Thursday.
Top seed Roddick was forced to scrape through a third set tiebreak by Cyril Saulnier in the second round on Tuesday in his first outing since losing to Roger Federer in a Wimbledon semi-final earlier this month.
But in the 24 minutes it took for the American to seize the first set against his French opponent, it was clear he is back to his intimidating best and readying himself in earnest for an assault on the US Open crown next month.
PALO ALTO (California): Second seed Kim Clijsters began her quest for a second Bank of the West Classic title with a 6-1 6-1 thrashing of American wildcard Amber Liu in their second round match on Thursday.
Earlier, seeded players Meghann Shaughnessy and Eleni Daniilidou were sent crashing out of the tournament in an afternoon of upsets.
Swiss teenager Maria-Gaianeh Mikaelian took out sixth seed Shaughnessy of the U.S. 3-6 7-6
6-4, while Italian veteran Francesa Schiavone romped over seventh seed Daniilidou of Greece 6-3 6-2.
However, ninth seed Lisa Raymond had little trouble moving into the last eight with a 6-4 6-2 victory over 18-year-old American qualifier Angela Haynes to set up a match against third seed Jennifer Capriati on Friday.

CORIA IN SEMIS
KITZBUEHEL (Austria): Second seed Guillermo Coria stormed into the semifinals of the Generali Open on Friday with a ruthless 6-3 6-1 rout of eighth seed Juan-Ignacio Chela.
The 21-year-old Argentine, who was equally unforgiving in his third-round 6-1 6-0 victory over Olivier Mutis earlier in the day, next faces 13th seed Feliciano Lopez of Spain.
