KARACHI, July 24: A re-count of the votes for the National Assembly constituency NA-239 (Karachi) was completed here on Wednesday in the office of the Provincial Election Commission, and its result was being tabulated.

In this constituency, according to the sources in the Election Commission, the recounting was ordered by the election tribunal on a petition filed by the PPP candidate Iftikhar Hussain.

The recounting of votes of 182 polling stations was started on July 3 which concluded on July 23. Its result, after the tabulation, would be submitted on July 29 to the tribunal headed by Justice Zawwar Hussain Jafri.

Initially, the PPP candidate had challenged the election of MMA’s Qari Gohar Rehman on the grounds of his qualification. But, during the course of hearing in May, he moved an application before the tribunal requesting it to pass an order for a vote re-count. This application was accepted by the tribunal.

During the re-count, some anomalies as well as disputed votes were found which called for a decision by the tribunal. The tabulation results, along with the disputed votes, would be submitted to the tribunal on July 29 for a decision, the sources said.
