KARACHI, July 24: Various parts of the city remained without water for the third consecutive day on Thursday, forcing the residents of the affected localities to either buy private tankers at exorbitant rates or to consume sub-soil unhygienic water.

The hard-hit localities include Gulshan-i-Iqbal’s blocks 2, 4, 4-A, 5, 13 and 13-C; parts of PECHS Block 6, Karachi Administration Housing Society, Mehmoodabad, Manzoor Colony, Gizri, Shireen Jinnah Colony, Clifton’s blocks 2, 4 and 5, Khudadad Colony, Malir’s Kausar Town, Saudia Colony, Qasimabad’s Block A, Nazimabad No 4, Buffer Zone’s sectors 15-A/1, 15-A/5 and 16-A; North Karachi’s sectors 11, 11-B, 14-A and 14-B.

Gulshan-i-Iqbal’s affected blocks which are without water for the last four days, will again go without water on Friday under weekly water-holiday system which is in vogue in the city since October last.

People residing in Ambreen Apartments, situated in Gulshan-i- Iqbal’s Block 2, deplored that although the water problem had been persisting in their apartment building for the last couple months, the concerned officials of water and sanitation department have not taken measures to rectify the fault responsible for it despite the fact that a number of complaints have been lodged with them.

Similarly, complaints of persisting water shortage have been received from the residents of Orangi’s Nishan-i-Haider Chowk, Pakistan Bazaar, L Block, Ghausia Colony, Makhdoom Shah Colony, Warsia Colony and number of other localities belonging to Union Council No 9.

Moreover, the other localities which went without water on Thursday under weekly water-holiday system included Landhi, Korangi, Defence Housing Authority, National Refinery, Karachi Port Trust and Pakistan Railways.

Residents of Malir’s Kausar Town, Saudabad, Khokhrapar and Saudia Colony regretted that on the one hand their localities often remain without water for weeks together and, on the other, their requests for water through paid-tankers at the Jamia Millia Hydrant remain unheeded for a week or so.

Residents said the drivers of tankers usually avoid supplying water to their localities owing to dilapidated condition of Jamia Millia Road.

CLOSURE: The localities where water supply would remain suspended on Friday are: Gulshan-i-Iqbal’s blocks 3, 4, 6, 7, 10, 10-A, 13-A, 13-B, 16, 17 and 18.

CONTAMINATED WATER: Residents of Centre Point bungalows, situated in Federal B’ Area’s Block 21, complained that they are being supplied stinking water.
