Present setup bound to fail, says PPP

By Our Staff Reporter

ISLAMABAD, July 23: Pakistan People’s Party Secretary-General Jahangir Badar said on Wednesday that the country could not be run under the present “so called” democratic system for long.

Talking to newsmen at the party’s secretariat, he said the system was neither presidential nor parliamentary and, therefore, it was bound to fail.

He said his party had announced a social boycott of the People’s Party Patriots members and legal action would soon be taken against them. He said the Patriots members had no connection with the party and their membership had been cancelled.

He said the Patriots leaders had used former prime minister Benazir Bhutto’s name for some time and now they had started criticizing her to please their masters.

He asked the Patriots members to resign from the assemblies and contest the election on the ticket of the Pakistan Muslim League (Quaid-i-Azam) or as independent.

He said the faction’s leaders were afraid of the people’s wrath and, therefore, they did not visit their constituencies.

He said the decision to bring Ms Bhutto back would be taken by the party at the “proper time.”

At the moment, he said, the party believed that she would not get justice from the courts if she returned.

Commenting on PML-Q chief Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain’s statement that there would be no discussion on President Gen Pervez Musharraf’s uniform, he said the PPP had never shut its door to talks as “a consensus is always possible when you enter the dialogue process.” He said Chaudhry Shujaat had been issuing such statements for scoring points and appease Gen Musharraf.

The PPP leader did not rule out the possibility of direct talks with the president on the LFO and his uniform.
