Army grab five golds

RAWALPINDI, July 22: Army were poised to win the All- Pakistan Brig Rodham Junior Championship on Tuesday with five of their boxers winning gold medals on the last day at the Army Stadium.

Finals of ten weight categories were to take place with six having been decided till the time of our going to Press.

Tariq Zia of the Army A team, competing in the bantamweight final captured the first gold of the evening beating Aslam Khan of the Army B. Punjab’s Zeeshan Shahid and Tariq Ameen of Wapda took bronze medals.

Akbar Ali was the other winner of the evening in the light weight category as he gave Army A their second gold as he outpointed B’s Sarzameen Khan. Muhammad Khan, representing Punjab and KPT’s Muhammad Ali had to be content with bronze.

With the pattern for the evening having been set by Tariq and Akbar, it was Muhammad Yasir who walked off with Army A’s third gold in the light welterweight competition against Muhammad Shoaib of Army B.

There seemed to be no stopping the Army pugilists as Muzammil Khan earned them the fourth gold by defeating B side’s Muhammad Nasir in the welterweight category. Farhan Ali of Punjab and KPT’s Dur Muhammad were the bronze winners.

In a middleweight contest, it was Ahmad Nawaz of Army B who struck gold beating Noman Khan of Railways. Other finals were continuing.
