RAWALPINDI, July 21: Jalal Kashif of Army A advanced to the finals of the light flyweight category on Monday as the All- Pakistan Brig Rodham Junior Boxing Championship resumed after Sunday’s rest day at the Army Stadium.
His victim was Muhammad Amjad of the Army B team against whom he won on points giving his side a perfect start on the penultimate evening of the championship.
But there was controversy in the flyweight bout between Army B’s Faheem ud Din and KPT’s Shahid Khan who was disqualified for throwing a punch at his rival when the referee had signalled him not to do so.
As a result of this Faheem was declared the winner but the KPT officials lodged a protest and the jury had yet to give its verdict.
In another flyweight fight, Wapda’s Shoaib Khan went through to the semis, the referee stopping his contest against Zeeshan Shahid of Punjab.
Ijaz Ahmed, another Punjab boxer outpointed KPT’s Wali Muhammad in the light flyweight category to qualify for the finals.
The other bouts were continuing till the filing of this report with Army boxers from both the A and B teams due to feature in sixteen of the semifinals in different weight categories.
The championship which began last Friday has attracted over a 100 boxers from all over the country who are competing outdoors for honours. Alternate arrangement in case of rain has however been made with a gymnasium located just next to the stadium.
