KARACHI: Ombudsmen likely at district level


KARACHI, July 21: Sindh Chief Secretary Dr. Muttawakil Kazi at a high-level meeting on Monday directed the home department to acquire guidance from the law department for the induction of district ombudsmen in all districts of the province.

The Sindh home secretary, Syed Anwar Haider, assured the Sindh chief secretary of prompt implementation of the directive.

Speaking at the meeting, the chief secretary said the posting of ombudsmen at district level would bring positive results and ensure best discipline in district governments.

The meeting also discussed the Sindh Local Government Ordinance and agreed to adopt an effective strategy in view of significance of district ombudsman for streamlining money-management and for balancing the managerial and financial disciplines.

The meeting also considered the public safety commission and the home secretary informed that the formation of provincial commission was in the final stages while eight commissions have been set up at the district level.

A summary regarding four more commissions had been forwarded to the higher authorities for an approval.

The home secretary requested for the provision of funds to meet the commission’s day to day requirements.

The meeting also discussed other matters relating to Police Complaint Authority and Public Safety Commission.

Meanwhile the chief secretary on Monday inspected all the flyovers in Karachi and expressed concern over accumulation of rain-water underneath them.

He asked the local government and works departments to make immediate arrangements for draining out water in view of the damage they may cause to the very foundation and pillars of flyovers.

He said that in future, immediate arrangements should be made for earth filling and drainage.

The meeting was attended, among others, by DG National Police Bureau, Aftab Nabi, IG Sindh, Syed Kamal Shah, Secretary Law, Ghulam Nabi Shah, Member land Utilization, Arif Azim, DCO Karachi, Mir Hussain Ali and other officials.—PPI/APP
