Idi Amin still in critical condition

JEDDAH, July 21: Former Ugandan dictator Idi Amin remained in critical condition on Monday, three days after he was admitted to a hospital in this Red Sea city, medical sources said.

“He is still alive. But he remains in critical condition in the intensive care unit” at King Faisal Specialist Hospital, one of Saudi Arabia’s top medical centres, a medical source at the hospital said.

Hospital officials refused to specify the exact cause of Idi Amin’s illness or provide details about his condition at the request of family members who have been living with him in Saudi Arabia for the last 10 years.

Arab News cited a hospital official as saying Amin was in a “vegetative state” after falling into a coma on Saturday.

“He is expected to die any moment,” the official said.

Hospital sources told the English-language daily that Mr Amin, receiving treatment over the past three months for hypertension and “general fatigue”, was suffering continued high blood pressure and his health was deteriorating.—AFP
