LAHORE, July 20: A police constable was killed and an alleged proclaimed offender suffered injuries in an “encounter” at Mahmoodbooti in Baghbanpura on Sunday.

The police claimed they raided a house to arrest two proclaimed offenders, Sharafat Ali and Asif Ali, both brothers. They alleged the wanted men opened fire at the police party which had to retaliate in self-defence.

The 15-minute crossfire resulted in injuries to constable Zulfikar Ali, 32, and one of the POs, Sharafat. They were rushed to a nearby hospital where the constable died after first aid dressing while the PO was stated to be in critical condition.

The police later arrested the other PO and his father Saif Ali and registered a case against them.

Zulfikar’s body was first taken to the city mortuary for autopsy and later to the district police lines where his funeral prayers were held.

The police command on behalf of Chief Minister Pervaiz Elahi announced Rs 500,000 for the bereaved family of the constable. He belonged to Sangla Hill. He has left behind a widow and three children.
