KARACHI, July 19: At least 10 more people died when heavy rain again hit Karachi on Saturday, bringing the death toll to 33 in the current wet spell.
Most of the deaths were caused by electrocution from falling wires.
The rain came early in the morning and was heavy in several city localities.
According to the police and the Edhi Foundation, the bodies of two unidentified young girls were retrieved from separate spots in the Gujjar nullah in Sharifabad. One of them is said to be about 12 years old and the other 13 or 14.
A 12-year-old boy drowned in a storm water drain in Shah Faisal Colony No. 5. The body was retrieved and shifted to a hospital where he was identified as Arif Nasir.
In Orangi Town’s sector-8, an 18-year-old boy was swept away by violent currents in a storm water drain. He was identified as Naimatullah.
A man killed and his wife and two children were injured when the roof of their kutcha house caved in during the rain in Soomar Goth in Malir. The dead man was identified as Khair Mohammad, 45. His wife Zarina, children Gulfam, 10, and Asma, 3, were treated at a hospital.
Those dying from electrocution were Asadullah, a rag-picker in New Karachi Industrial Area; Ashfaq Gondal, a milk vendor in Surjani Town; Hasan Khan near Al-Asif Square in Gulzar-i-Hijri; Gattha Ram near Gharibabad and Khairunnisa in Juma Goth, Al-Falah Society.
Earlier, 23 people had died in different rain-related incidents in the metropolis since the rain began on July 7.
Five people died on July 7 in separate incidents and eight of a family died the next day when a landslide crushed their kutcha house in Gulistan-i-Jauhar.
At least 10 people died and dozens were injured in the city on July 16. Substantial damage to public and private property was also caused by a dust storm that was followed by a downpour.
