Lyon secure spot in final

SEOUL, July 19: A powerful strike from Sidney Govou gave Olympique Lyon a 1-0 win over K-League title holders Seongnam Ilhwa on Saturday to secure the French champions a place in the final of the Peace Cup pre-season tournament.

The young France striker scored early in the first half after the Seongnam goalkeeper could only partially parry his snap shot from just outside the area.

The South Korean side had a series of chances, but to the disappointment of the majority of the crowd in Chonju they were guilty of poor finishing.

Victory puts the French club on top of Group A and books them a place in Tuesday’s final in the Seoul World Cup Stadium.

Current leaders Nacional of Uruguay play 1860 Munich, while PSV Eindhoven will meet Los Angeles Galaxy.

In the other match in Group A on Saturday, Besiktas of Turkey drew 2-2 with South Africa’s Kaiser Chiefs in Pusan.

The Peace Cup, which pits eight clubs from five continents, is being backed by the Reverend Moon Sun-myung’s Unification Church, whose followers are commonly known as “Moonies” after their founder.—Reuters
