SWABI, July 18: The convener of the Swabi tehsil council on Friday dodged members of the opposition, who sought to file a no-confidence motion against the tehsil Nazim Masood Jabar.
Opposition leader Raham Akbar and other members of the council said that they had approached him at his office at 11am. They said that they had handed him the no-trust motion before he rushed out of his office.
Mr Akbar said that they kept waiting for him for hours but he did not turn up.
They said that they had decided to file the motion on Saturday.
He said they had informed district coordination officer Dr Jamal Nasir that the convener had played an unconstitutional role in this regard.
Mr Jabar belongs to the Independent Swabi Group appeared to be in deep trouble because as opposition members and some angry members from the treasury benches assured the opposition of their support against the tehsil Nazim.
The opposition group, belonging to the Awami National Party, had held a meeting with members of the treasury benches, claiming that they had the support of 36 treasury members to unseat the Nazim.
They said that others, who favoured the tehsil Nazim’s removal, included 39 Naib-Nazims, 13 lady councillors, two minority members and two general councillors, while only 29 members were need to unseat the nazim. Some local MPAs were also playing a role against the nazim.
The opposition claimed that PPP, PML-N and religious parties had also assured them of their support.
The opposition had earlier fielded Rahman Akbar, Naib-Nazim of the Turlandi union council, for the tehsil Nazim’s post.
Leader of the opposition in the district council Jehan Zeb had played a vital role in the formation of the opposition to settle his scores the SIG leaders who had defeated him during the district Nazim election.
President of the ISG Muqarab Khan said that they were making efforts to foil the no-confidence motion, claiming that four of their seven members, who had earlier attended meeting with the opposition, had come back to their fold.
Liaqat Khan, who had earlier been nominated for the post of opposition leader, was siding with the tehsil Nazim.
