10 die as rains hit Karachi

KARACHI, July 16: At least 10 people were killed and many others injured in rain-related accidents in different parts of the city on Wednesday, police and Edhi source said.

Substantial damage to public and private property was also reported in different parts of the city as a result of a dust-storm that preceded the rain.

Three women died and two girls injured when the boundary wall of a seminary collapsed on their houses in Orangi Town during the rain on Wednesday.

Police said Razia, 50, wife of Noor Ahmed, and Zakia, 21, daughter of Abdul Aziz, were seriously injured. They were rushed to the Qatar Hospital in Orangi Town, where they died.

Another woman identified as Khatoon, 40, died on the spot. Her body was not shifted to the hospital, Edhi sources said.

Two girls identified as Nazneen, 2, daughter of Abdul Aziz, and Gul Fareen, 4, were also injured in the incident, but were out of danger, hospital sources said.

An elderly man, who had taken refuge from rain under a billboard, near Jail Chowrangi, died when it fell on him as a result of strong winds.

Police said that Nadir Khan, 65, a resident of Eissa Nagri, was hit on the head near the Jail Chowrangi.

In another incident, a young motorcyclist died and his brother injured when they were hit by a flying metal sheet near Nasheman cinema.

Police said Joseph, 42, and his brother Shams, 30, were going on their motorcycle (KCF-4851) when they were hit by the sheet.

Fatima, 50, was killed and her husband and two children were injured when a tree fell on the auto-rickshaw in which they were travelling in the Buffer Zone during the storm. Confirming the incident, chief fire officer Kazim Ali told Dawn that the family were rescued by the fire officials.

A 12-year-old boy died of electrocution in Eidgah during the rain on Wednesday.

Police said Altaf was taking a bath during the rain at the KMC ground when an overhead live wire fell in the rainwater.

In another rain-related accident, a motorcyclist was killed when a water tanker skidded and crushed him to death in Korangi Industrial Area.

Police said that Abbas, 26 and Javed, 30, were going on their motorcycle when a speeding water tanker skidded in the rain and knocked them down.

Abbas died on the spot while Javed was shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre.

A young boy died when he suffered a head injury during the storm in Pak Colony.

Police said that Zahid, 18, was going to his home in Rexerline when he was hit by a flying metal object in the head.

He was taken to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre where he died during treatment, hospital sources said.

An unidentified boy was swept away in a storm drain in Korangi on Wednesday.

Police said an unknown boy fell into a swollen storm drain in Korangi. His body could not be recovered from the drain despite attempts by residents.

A two-year-old girl was seriously injured when she was struck by a metal sheet which had broken lose from the roof of a house in Bhitaiabad as a result of strong winds.

Hameeda was shifted to the Civil Hospital where her condition was stated to be serious.

Till the filing of this report the girl had not regained consciousness.

A seven-year-old boy suffered serious injuries when he slipped from stairs of an apartment building in Mithadar.

Hasnain, 7, was shifted to the Civil Hospital in a serious condition, whereas Mehtab, wife of Azmatullah, was injured when the wall of her house collapsed in Agra Taj Colony during the rain.

Two factory workers were injured when they were hit by a flying metal sheet in Korangi.
