SEOUL, July 15: Substitute Kim Dae-ui snatched an injury-time winner as K-League champions Seongnam Ilhwa came from behind to beat Turkish title holders Besiktas 2-1 in the Peace Cup pre-season tournament on Tuesday.
French champions Olympique Lyon eased past Kaiser Chiefs of South Africa 2-0 in the other Group A match on the opening day of the competition backed by the Reverend Moon Sun-myung, whose followers are commonly known as “Moonies.”
At Seoul World Cup Stadium, recent signing Sinan Kaloglu put Besiktas ahead after just six minutes but Yugoslav forward Sasa Drakulic equalised for Seongnam three minutes later with a brilliantly struck free-kick from 30 metres.
Heavy rain limited chances in the second half until Kim headed a dramatic late winner for Seongnam, who have won the South Korean title for the past two seasons.
Lyon were simply too good for the Kaiser Chiefs and after striker Bryan Bergougnoux scored two early goals, they cruised to victory in front of a 15,000 crowd in Taejon.
On Wednesday, Dutch champions PSV Eindhoven, managed by former South Korea coach Guus Hiddink, play 1860 Munich in Pusan and the Los Angeles Galaxy face Uruguayan club Nacional in Chonju in Group B.
