Enforcement wing

Published July 16, 2003

ISLAMABAD, July 15: The Central Board of Revenue (CBR) is planning to set up an enforcement wing within the board for effective application of tax laws and bring more taxpayers under the tax net.

Well-placed sources told Dawn on Tuesday that the decision was taken at a tax officials meeting chaired by the chairman, CBR.

Sources said that the proposed wing to be headed by a member, would conduct raids on suspected business offices, factories and other industrial places to detect the possible evasion of sales tax and central excise duty (CED).

The sources, however, said that the proposed wing would enhance the discretionary powers of the tax officials.

The government has already introduced universal self assessment scheme for income tax to be effective from current tax year. The same would be introduced for customs from the next year to facilitate the taxpayers.
