Akhtar leads in chess


KARACHI, July 13: In the second phase of Bin Qasim Town chess championship being played at E.Complex College Gulshan-e-Hadeed, fourth seed player, Akhter Hussain topped the points table by beating Raees Ansari and Al Haj Mehmood in the third and fourth round.

Akhtar had one point lead over all contenders. The top seeded Master Waqar beat Hafeez-ur-Rehman from Hyderabad in the third round and drew with Raees Ansari in the fourth round.

In other matches Shakir beat Imtiaz Ahmed, Al Haj Mehmood defeated Salahuddin, Master Farooqui downed Akmal Hussain in the fourth round.

In the Group B matches younster Adnan from Malir, still unbeaten with four points had a smooth run after beating favourite Nasir Ahmed in the fourth round and took half point lead over all participants.

Results

Group A: Akhtar Hussain 3.5 Pts, M Waqar and Shakir 3 Pts, Raees Ansari 2.5 Pts, N M Farooqui, Imtiaz and Al Haj Mehmood 2 Pts.

Group B: Adnan 4 Pts, Azhar Mehboob 3.5 Pts, Nasir Mehmood, Azhar Javed and Shauk Rahim 3 Pts, Mubariz 2.5 Pts, A. Rahim, Talib Hussain, Saeed-ur-Rehman, Ali Reza and Nabeel 2 Pts.—PPI
