King Of Bhakkar sweeps to victory

By Aftab Gilani

LAHORE, July 13: Five-year-old gelding, King Of Bhakkar, ridden admirably by jockey Shahid Rehman made amends to his defeat on July 6, winning to his liking the fifth and supporting event run over 1200m during the Lahore Gymkhana races at the Racecourse on Sunday.

King Of Bhakkar beat late rushing Beena Roy Baby by six lengths, who nosed out top-weight better Case to third position.

Fancied Honest Bird, who fought a neck to neck battle with the winner in the straight exhausted his stamina to finish fourth, one-and-a-half lengths further behind.

This was an abrupt end of Honest Bird’s winning streak of five victories in-a-row. Credit goes to Shahid Rehman, who rode the winner in a flawless waiting style.

Riding Boy A. Aziz stole the day’s riding honours by bringing home a brace of winners through Copper Fields in the opener and Little Master in the third race of the day.

Copper Fields was a favourite while Little Master was available at four to one.

The second race which was considered to be a one-horse affair for the fancied bay filly Gun Salute ended in a biggest upset of the season.

In this event totally neglected chestnut colt Chandiwala showed tr emendous improvement to win by over four lengths from Victorious with Hot Press and Gun Salute, a close third and fourth, respectively.

Chandiwala was so unbacked that punters who had backed him for win on totalisator betting received a handsome dividend of rupees 30,790, each for a rupees 100 ticket.

Bay colt Roman Charger was the short priced winner of the afternoon in the fourth race of the six-event card. Ridden by jockey Salah-ud-Din II, Roman Charger made his 14 rivals to lick the ground finally defeating Morning Noor by two lengths. King’s Way and Puma King finished third and fourth, respectively.

In the same race three-year-old filly Legality stumbled during the race and her rider Faisal Husain fell down. Luckily he escaped with minor bruises.

Race-goers enjoyed afternoon races in a partly cloudy weather which provided them some relief from the prolonged spell of muggy weather with four well-backed horses winning out of six events.Four races were contested over 1000 metres and two over 1200 metres.
