KARACHI, July 13: Jockey Shahzad and trainer Moheyuddin, shared the racing honours at the Summer Gymkhana Race Meeting with a brace of winners apiece, at the Karachi Racecourse on Sunday.

Shahzad stole the limelight in the third race, when he piloted Rajwar to a start to finish victory, beating the rank favourite Visitor ridden by M. Mazhar by one and half lengths, after the latter taking a late start was bottled in by a bunch of runners and by the time Mazhar managed to overcome this hurdle, the race was over bar the shouting.

Shahzad completed his double in the concluding event, when he replaced Asghar Ali in the saddle to guide M. Ateeq’s bay five-year-old horse The Club Champion to an easy victory an enabling the winner to complete a a hat trick of victories for the overjoyed owner.

Moheyuddin, a former rider turned trainer, belonging to a renowned racing family, had his moments of triumphs in the fifth race of the afternoon, when Faisal Farooq’s thoroughbred bay horse Neelam Taab never gave the connections any anxious moments, sprinting to victory with M. Barani in the saddle, beating nearest rival Mischievous by a handsome margin of nine lengths.

Moheyuddin did not have to wait long to score another winner, when his charge Ray Of Light with M. Rehman in the saddle, silenced the rest of the field in the seventh race, beating well backed runners Satellite Star, Roberto Carlos Fans and Mega Hit.

In the opener, Law Of Nature with a rattling burst collared the raging favourite Grey Boy half a furlong from home, but in turn was overtaken in the last strides by Even Top ridden splendidly by seasoned rider M. Khizer.

The next race was won by owner-trainer Nazir’s half bred bay horse Win Today, making it two in a row for the owner, with Riaz Mohammad astride. Knight Gambler grabbed the second spot from Mark, with Lucky Lover completing the frame. The fourth race on the racing programme was cancelled by the Stewards, after suspicions arose that the roan colt Your Pleasure, a joint favourite with Deniro, was not ticking. In the bargain the owner of Your Please was fined Rs.20000 and the entry of the horse was banned for a period of two months.

The most thrilling event of the afternoon was witnessed in the sixth, when promising young jockey M. Nasir with a flurry of hands and heels, won the race on Wonder Thunder, ending the winning streak of Canon Again piloted by M Mazhar.

In fact M. Mazhar, a former champion rider had a miserable afternoon, when three favourites he was riding, Grey Boy in the opener, Visitor in the third and Canon Again in the sixth, failed to oblige the racing fans.

A welcome indeed was to see jockey Salim Ahmed back in the saddle, after an absence of nearly seven years when he had gone to Dubai to work over there.

The next race meeting is scheduled for Sunday, July 20.
