LAHORE, July 11: The Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal observed Friday as a protest day against the 50 plus killings caused by an attack on a Quetta mosque a few days ago.

Prayer leaders highlighted the tragic incident in their sermons, calling upon their followers to be watchful of the enemy which wanted to destabilize the country.

Condemning in strongest terms, they urged the government to take effective steps to prevent the recurrence of such incidents.

In Lahore, the MMA and the Islami Tehrik held demonstrations in various parts of the city.

Speaking at one such demonstration, Liaquat Baloch, Sibtain Kazmi and Amjad Khan said there was complete sectarian harmony in the country and claims to the contrary were baseless.

They said the government had failed to protect the lives and property of the people.

Some of the participants raised slogans against the government.

The Tehrik-i-Islami held a demonstration outside the Lahore Press Club.

A banner carried by participants was inscribed with the demand that military courts should be set up in the country.

Jamaat-i-Islami Secretary-General Syed Munawwar Hasan criticized the government for its failures on all fronts. He said the LFO was not part of the Constitution and those insisting that it was, were violating the very provisions of the basic law.

He said the government should not send troops to Iraq as the nation would not tolerate such a step.

The JI leader opposed recognizing Israel.
