Water pressure erodes embankment

SUKKUR, July 11: The increasing water pressure in the River Indus has led to the erosion of the Qadirpur loop bund in the Ghotki district.

The water is persistently putting pressure on the loop bund and has eroded 600 metres to one kilometre area of the bund.

However, Sindh Irrigation and Drainage Authority director Zafarullah Mahar said the situation was under control.

He said Sida personnel were filling the erosion and 50 per cent work had been completed so far. He said the personnel daily visited the bund and dumped stone at weak points. He said the job would be completed before the water pressure was further increased.

CHIEF MINISTER: Sindh Chief Minister Ali Mohammad Mahar on Friday visited weak portions of the Qadirpur protective bund in front of the Ibrahim Chachar village where the River Indus had changed its course and was directly hitting the bund.

The chief minister directed the authorities concerned to start the repair work on war footing and ensure immediate steps to deflect the course of the River Indus. He assured the authorities of provision of funds for the work.

The Sida director gave a detailed briefing to Mr Mahar and said the erosion of the protective bund had occurred due to the change of course of the River Indus. Mr Mahar directed the Sida director to ensure strengthening of the bund.

The CM also asked the people to check quality of the work and report to him if low-quality material was used in the repair of the bund. He said action would be taken against corrupt officers.

The chief minister motored along the protective bund for about four hours.

Earlier, Mr Mahar paid a surprise visit to ongoing development schemes being carried out in union council-2, Ghotki city. He expressed dissatisfaction over the quality of work and ordered an inquiry into the matter.

BREACH: A 35-foot-wide breach developed in the Pir Shakh near Thull on Friday, inundating the Haji Khair Mohammad Khan Khoso village and standing rice crops.

Ahmad Ali Khoso, the Nazim of Misripur union council, along with 40 labourers reached the spot and started plugging the breach as no irrigation official visited the site till 6:00pm.
