Published July 12, 2003

HYDERABAD, July 11: The Sindh population welfare department staged a rally outside the press club here on Friday to mark the World Population Day.

Activists of various NGOs, including the Youth Welfare Society, Mehran Women Welfare Organization, Kainat Welfare and Arts Circles and the Green Star, participated in the rally.

Earlier, the participants of the rally marched through the main roads of the city.

Speaking at the rally, district population welfare officer Jafar Baloch stressed the need for controlling the population growth. He said resources were on the decline as a result problems of health, education and food had increased, compelling the people to commit suicide.

He said presently the ratio of population growth in the country was 2.1 per cent and in Sindh it was 2.2 per cent. He said the minister had chalked out a plan to establish population welfare centres at taluka level.—Bureau
