Federer storms into last eight

GSTAAD (Switzerlan), July 10: Wimbledon champion Roger Federer stormed into the Swiss Open quarterfinals for the first time with a 6-1 6-2 demolition of Frenchman Jean-Rene Lisnard on Thursday.

The top seed and home favourite, who had never made it beyond the second round in Gstaad, disposed of Lisnard decisively in front of a sell-out 6,000 crowd.

Federer will next face Spaniard David Sanchez who knocked out defending champion and seventh seed Alex Corretja 6-4 6-4.

Federer, now ranked third in the world after becoming the first Swiss male Grand Slam winner at Wimbledon on Sunday, struggled to adapt to the clay courts high in the Alps on Tuesday when he scraped past Spanish qualifier Marc Lopez.

But the 21-year-old from Basel rediscovered his Wimbledon form with a commanding performance against unseeded Lisnard.

Federer beat Sanchez in four sets in the French Open third round two years ago.

Results:

Roger Federer bt Jean-Rene Lisnard 6-1 6-2; Rainer Schuettler bt Christophe Rochus 6-3 7-6 (8-6); Radek Stepanek bt Michel Kratochvil 6-3 7-6 (7-5); David Sanchez bt Alex Corretja 6-4 6-4—Reuters
