RAWALPINDI, July 10: The arguments were almost completed on Thursday in the writ petition filed by Pakistan Olympic Association (POA) against the relevant provisions of the national sports policy.

Justice Shakoor Peracha of Lahore High Court, Rawalpindi Bench, heard arguments from both the counsels in the petition filed on behalf of POA President with Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) made respondent.

The relevant provisions of the new national sports policy bar an office- bearer from holding more than two consecutive terms of four years each in a sports federation, including olympic association.

The counsel Nawaz Qasoori, representing the petitioner, and deputy attorney general, Chaudhary Sultan Mansoor, pleaded the case of their respective sides on Thursday also.

The petitioner contends that limiting the tenure in the sports policy is in contravention of the fundamental rights while the respondent pleads that PSB ordinance 1961 gives it the right to frame necessary rules.

The two counsels hope that a verdict will soon be given in the petition filed in March last year.

SOA elections

The elections of Sindh Olympic Association (SOA) will be held on July 12.

Sindh Sports Board (SSB) has ruled that the sports association, who failed to implement National Sports Policy 2001 had no right to take part in the elections of SOA.

Pakistan Olympic Association (POA) has set the date of elections without adopting proper procedures for holding elections, provincial sports associations representatives said on Thursday.

No election schedule has been announced, nor list of eligible voter lists has been issued, neither schedule of issuance and receipts of nomination papers and prior time has not been given for conducting the elections as per the constitution.—APP
