HYDERABAD, July 10: The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan’s Special Task Force for Sindh, Hyderabad chapter, has accused the Berani police, Sanghar, of keeping four peasants in illegal detention.
In a statement issued here on Wednesday, HRCP Bonded Labour coordinator said a peasant, Chunnu, son of Balu, had filed a petition in the Sindh High Court, Hyderabad circuit, on Oct 9, 2001, complaining that local landlords Qadir Bux Khaskheli, Mohammad Hassan Khaskheli and Mumtaz Khaskheli had detained 12 members of his family as quid pro quo for loans. He said the SHC ordered release of the peasants on Oct 29 and directed that the landlords should approach the civil court for recovery of loans.
The coordinator said the peasants started working as labourers in Nawabshaw after their release.
He alleged that the Berani police continued to harass the peasants and said the HRCP had informed the DPO of Sanghar about the harassment.
He said the Berani police arrested Marui, wife of Balu, Amru, wife of Gomanu, Balu, son of Gomanu, and Achar, son of Balu, on June 27. He said instead of keeping the arrested persons at the police station, the police, in connivance with landlords, detained them at some other place.
MAN TORTURED: A man has accused the Kotri police of torturing him and said he will move the relevant court of law for seeking justice.
Speaking at a news conference at the press club here on Wednesday, Rana Enterprises employee Pathan Khan Jaiser said he lodged an FIR at the Kotri police station after he was robbed of Rs130,000 in cash on June 24 which he had collected from various octroi posts for the Rana Enterprises contractor.
He said instead of arresting the robbers he was called to the police station on July 3 where he was handed over by the SHO to ASI Raja Thebo and another policeman, Aijaz Soomro.
He said these police officers took him to a private bungalow in Kotri and tortured him by hanging him upside down. He said when his condition became critical, he was abandoned in the Site area on Tuesday night. He also showed torture marks on his body to journalists.
He demanded legal action against the policemen.
