HYDERABAD: Wasa fails to drain out rainwater : Power crisis continues
By Our Correspondent
HYDERABAD, July 9: Rainwater remained standing in various parts of the city as civic agencies failed to drain out the water on Wednesday.
The standing water is creating problems for people and can spread diseases.
District Nazim Dr Makhdoom Rafikuzzaman visited the City taluka along with City Nazim Moinuddin Shaikh to assess the situation arising out of three days of rains.
Mr Shaikh complained to the district Nazim about the performance of the Water and Sanitation Agency and the Hyderabad Development Authority during the recent rains as people were badly affected by accumulation of rainwater, mixed with overflowing gutter water.
The situation in areas of Noorani Basti and Liaquat Colony, Darya Khan Goth, Fateh Chowk, Hali Road and American Quarter remained pathetic as civic bodies were still trying to drain out the rainwater.
Talking to this correspondent, a resident of Noorani Basti, Ghayoor Ahmad, said knee-deep water was still standing in the area and it was difficult for residents, particularly women and children, to wade through the filthy water. He criticized officials of civic agencies for not draining out the water.
However, the City Nazim said a pump had been commissioned for the area to drain out the rainwater.
Wasa managing director M. Tahir claimed that sewage water could only be cleared from the city after the inflow of water at the Phulelli Canal was decreased by six feet. He said it would be difficult to release drainage water in the canal if the inflow of water was not reduced.
According to the chief engineer of the Kotri Barrage, who was contacted by the district Nazim for reducing the water flow, the water inflow at the Phulelli Canal could not be reduced as the people were demanding full supply of water and calling for an end to the rotation programme.
Many areas continued to remain without electricity.
SDO Shaheen Umer said a 600 kilo watt transformer, which burnt on Tuesday, had been replaced by two transformers and power supply would be restored to the area by 9pm.
Complaints of power suspension were also received from Hirabad, Sarfaraz and Rizvi sub-divisions.
