KARACHI: Minister for raising status of women

KARACHI, July 8: Sindh minister for women development Dr Saeeda Malik said the government was taking concerted steps to end exploitation of women and to improve their status in the society.

She was talking to a women’s delegation, which discussed various issues, with the minister, concerning women, including the incidents of karo kari in the province.

Expressing concern over Karo Kari cases, the minister said that government intends to bring necessary legislation in this regard.

She said the people should also cooperate with the government for elimination of this uncivilized customs.

“It is our collective responsibility to get women the right to live with honour and dignity,” she said.

She said social organisations should identify the problems of the women and chalk out programmes for their welfare, pointing out that as a mother, wife, daughter and daughter-in-law, women had a special status in the society.

She outlined the steps being taken for women welfare, including the establishment of day-care centres and working women hostels.—APP
