Favourites fail to oblige punters at weekend races

By Aftab Gilani

LAHORE, July 6: Punters suffered heavy losses when only one firm favourite obliged them in a card of six during the Lahore Gymkhana races at the Racecourse on Sunday.

The single favourite to oblige backers of favourites was  the three-year-old bay colt Amazing, who won the fifth and supporting event run over 1000m.

Fighting a neck-to-neck battle with dark-bay colt Puma King, Amazing defeated him by half-a-length finally.

Morning Noor and King’s Way completed the board among eleven runners left after the last-minute withdrawal of Hunza and Birju.

The  punters rout began right from the opener in which  three to  one Blue Champion landed the spoils defeating Narala by  one- and-a-half lengths.

Fancied Easy Come Easy Go finished third three-fourth of a length further behind while Barbara ran fourth, five lengths further away.

Three-year-old  bay colt Gun Salute, backed at 3 to 1  scored his maiden victory in the second race. He defeated fancied  Royal Victory  by five lengths. Gun Salute had finished off the  frame in  his previous outing on Sunday last.

Lahore Race Club (LRC) stewards questioned jockey M. Imran, who rode the colt that day and not being satisfied with his explanation they suspended him from riding for 15 days and also fined rupees five thousands for his unsatisfactory riding.

Chestnut  filly Las Pal Mas caused a big upset in the  third race  defeating joint favourites Final Count Down and  Fifty  Six Fifty Six to second and third position, respectively.

Bay  colt Dhandhana won the fourth race beating Sun  Of  Gold and  Dancing  Margina in the same order. Fancied  Little  Master could hardly finish on the board.

Long  shot  bay  mare Burn Heart proved her  class  when  she outpaced  her  15 rivals to win the feature event run  over  1000 metres.  Ridden  smartly by jockey Salah-ud-Din  II,  Burn  Heart running  abreast  of  the field won by  over  four  lengths  from fancied King Of Bhakkar. Better Case and Show Counting  completed the  board among 16 runners. Bay colt Set A Fire , who  was  also backed, fractured a leg during the race and finished among also ran.
