PPP to move against party renegades

By Amir Wasim

ISLAMABAD, July 5: People’s Party Parliamentarians on Saturday asked its lawyers to prepare references against members of the People’s Party Patriots and unseat them, sources told Dawn.

A decision to this effect was taken at a joint meeting of the party’s central executive committee, its federal council as well as the party’s parliamentary groups in the National Assembly and Senate. The meeting was still continuing till the filing of this report.

The meeting was convened by PPP president Makhdoom Amin Fahim to review the current domestic political situation. It would also finalize the agenda for the All-Parties Conference called by the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal, which is scheduled to be held in Lahore on Sunday. Almost all People’s Party Parliamentarians legislators and party office-bearers from across the country were present on the occasion.

Sources said that the meeting also discussed matters regarding the party’s reorganization.

Some of the party members expressed serious reservation over a possible alliance with the MMA, sources said.

Expressing solidarity with the MMA, the PPP members said that the government had been applying intense pressure against the alliance of religio-political parties.

Criticizing the government, they said that it was jeopardizing the future of two provincial governments through challenging MMA members’ educational qualifications, adding that the alliance would not compromise on principles.

The People’s Party Parliamentarians had already announced that it would take part in the APC as had been decided by Alliance for the Restoration of Democracy chief Nawabzada Nasrullah Khan.

Other items on the meeting’s agenda included unseating of the MMA’s MNA from Kohat, Gen Musharraf’s US visit and the law and order situation in the country.

Makhdoom Amin Fahim, Jehangir Badar and Syed Qaim Ali Shah would represent the party in the APC, sources said.
