JHANG, July 2: A raiding party of the Jhang police apprehended a proclaimed offender between Sunday and Monday night from Jumman Shah village, Layyah district, and also retrieved four abductees.

PO Mumtaz Hussain was wanted by Jhang police in cases of murder and kidnap for ransom-cum-murder.

Mumtaz had been declared PO after he had murdered three people in a village of Massan police station in September 2000, and escaped from the area. Despite being in the hiding, the PO kept pressurising the complainant party for compromise. In April 2003, he abducted four people of the complainant party in a bid to harass them for compromise.

On Sunday, Saddar DSP Masood Ahmad Javed received an information that PO Mumtaz was hiding in Jumman Shah village along with four abductees. At this, the DSP formed the raiding party which left for Jumman Shah and raided the hideout at the dead of night and arrested PO Mumtaz. The raiding team also recovered four abductees. A large quantity of illicit arms and ammunition were also recovered from the hideout.

MOVES COURT: A complainant on Wednesday again filed an application in a local court to transfer the investigation of a criminal case against the Massan SHO to some other police station.

On the orders of the local district and sessions judge, the Massan police had registered a criminal case against its own SHO Rana Rustam Ali, but cancelled the FIR after a few minutes.

Shahbaz Ahmad of Saidanwala village had filed a writ petition in court of the DSJ, praying for the registration of a case against Massan SHO Rana Rustam Ali. He had alleged in his plaint that the SHO had entered his house along with four constables in plainclothes. They allegedly thrashed the inmates, molested the womenfolk and took his father Ghulam Akbar along with them. The SHO kept his father in an illegal confinement at his official residence adjacent to the police station.

The motive behind this alleged highhandedness was stated to be the ejection of petitioner’s family from the lands of SHO’s friend, Nawab Mansoor Ali Khan. After hearing the petition, the judge ordered the registration of a criminal case against the SHO and four constables, but the police did not register the case. However, after getting a contempt of court notice, the police had registered the case, but cancelled it immediately without any investigation.
