Published July 2, 2003

KARACHI, July 1: Karachi City Council in its session lasting for more than 12 hours approved the Rs27,582.38 million surplus budget of the Karachi City Government, nearly overhauling it in 60 cut motions that were moved through five resolutions.

Council slashed all the contingency budget of the City Government by 20 per cent besides about 30 heads amounting to some Rs300 million have been abolished.

The House also approved one of the most controversial demands of the Al-Khadim, Awam Dost and other groups to allocate large amounts to the UCs and city councillors for development works in their area. Though, this demand was severely opposed by the Al-Khidmat group, effective manoeuvring by Siddique Rathore compelled them to concede.—PPI
