Kallis century sets up easy win
CANTERBURY (England), June 29: South Africa all-rounder Jacques Kallis struck his second century in two days to set up his side’s 46-run victory over Zimbabwe in the triangular series on Sunday.
After a late run charge engineered by Kallis, who struck an unbeaten 125, his highest one-day score, South Africa posted a competitive total of 272 for five from their 50 overs.
Travis Friend kept Zimbabwe in the hunt with 82 from 93 balls, including two sixes off Nicky Boje, but after his dismissal they lost momentum and finished on 226 for nine.
Kallis, who stroked 107 in a losing cause against England at The Oval on Saturday, took 89 balls for his first 50 against some accurate bowling but needed only 48 more to reach his 10th one-day century with his 10th boundary.
After coming to the crease with his team on seven for one after being asked to bat on a hot, sunny day, Kallis found an able assistant in Andrew Hall, promoted to number five, who scored 56 and helped add 91 for the fourth wicket.
In a vibrant all-round performance, Hall took three for 38 in nine overs of whole-hearted medium pace and added a run out and a catch for good measure.
Hall brought some much-needed momentum to the South Africa innings, scurrying quick singles and lofting left-arm spinner Ray Price for two sixes over long on.
He brought up his second one-day half-century with another six, reaching his 50 from 42 balls with three fours and three sixes. Hall finally perished trying for another six over mid-wicket off Sean Irvine and was held by a diving Grant Flower running in from the fence.
Shaun Pollock and Makhaya Ntini restricted Zimbabwe to 10 for one off the first six overs before Dion Ebrahim and Friend rescued the innings with a sensible 108-run second-wicket partnership.
Ebrahim made a patient 40 from 68 balls before he was caught off left-arm spinner Boje and Friend finally perished when he was bowled by a straight delivery from Hall which effectively extinguished Zimbabwe’s hopes.
